Volunteers who save lives and shape futures

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally funded, 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation and the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. CAP is America’s premier public service organization that provides emergency services and disaster relief missions nationwide. Vigilant volunteers search for and find the lost, provide comfort in times of disaster, and work to keep the homeland safe. Members selflessly devote their time, energy, and expertise toward the well-being of their communities, promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace education and helping shape future leaders through CAP’s cadet program.

Writing about CAP?

  • Spell out Civil Air Patrol on first reference, then use CAP. Write “CAP,” not “the CAP.”
  • CAP is the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force — a congressionally chartered nonprofit, not a government agency.
  • Members are volunteers. Most are not pilots, and no military service is required.
  • Young people join as cadets between ages 12 and 18 and can stay until 21. Adults join at 18 with no upper age limit.
  • Local units are wings (one per state, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico) and the squadrons within them — e.g. “CAP’s Texas Wing” or “the Lubbock Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol.”
